Under Hall of Fame head coach John Kundla, and with the NBAs first superstar in George Mikan,6 they would win three more titles in 1. The first NBA Finals match up between the two teams was in 1. April 9, the Boston Celtics swept the Minneapolis Lakers 4 0 for the first sweep in the history of the NBA Finals. This would mark the first Finals loss for the previously dominant Lakers, and the first of eight straight titles for Boston. Los Angeles Lakers and Celtics DynastyeditThe Lakers relocated to Los Angeles in 1. It was after this move, and during this decade, that the rivalry would truly escalate. The two teams emerged as the strongest in the NBA, featuring greats such as Bill Russell, Tom Heinsohn, John Havlicek, Sam Jones and head coach Red Auerbach for Boston and Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, and coachGM Fred Schaus for Los Angeles. Game Maker Punch Out Nes. However, it would ultimately prove to be the decade of the Celtics, who won the finals every year in the 1. The Lakers would be the Celtics opponent in six of those series 1. The Celtics won all of those match ups. Three of those series 1. The Celtics win over the Lakers in 1. North American professional sports team. The Lakers acquired Wilt Chamberlain in 1. Bill Russell, previously a feature of the Celtics 7. Celtics Lakers. 2. The Lakers posted the best record in the West during the 1. By contrast, the aging Celtics struggled to obtain the fourth seed, with Russell and Jones playing in their final seasons. Despite this, the Celtics upset the Philadelphia 7. New York Knicks and made it to the Finals. The Lakers had home court advantage for the first time and won the first two games, but the Celtics rebounded to force and win a dramatic Game 7 at the Los Angeles Forum, defying Lakers owner Jack Kent Cookes infamous prediction of a Lakers celebration. West was named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team,2. Lakers went without a championship, every one of their Finals losses in that decade coming at the hands of the Celtics. Wilt Chamberlain 1. Los Angeles Lakers in the 1. NBA finals vs Boston Celtics. The 1. 96. 9 Finals also caused a deterioration in the relationship between Russell and Chamberlain, who had previously been friends despite their rivalry, into one of intense loathing, when Chamberlain took himself out of the decisive Game 7 with six minutes left, and Russell thereafter accused Chamberlain of being a malingerer and of copping out of the game when it seemed that the Lakers would lose. Chamberlain whose knee was so bad that he could not play the entire offseason and ruptured it in the next season was livid at Russell and saw him as a backstabber. The two men did not talk to each other for over 2. Russell attempted to patch things up, although he never uttered a genuine apology. When Chamberlain died in 1. Chamberlains nephew stated that Russell was the second person he was ordered to break the news to. Championships but no rematcheditThe Lakers and Celtics both found success in the 1. The start of the decade saw the Lakers woes in the NBA Finals continue, with a loss to the New York Knicks in 1. However, the Lakers rebounded two years later to win the 1. NBA Finals and their first championship in Los Angeles, also against the Knicks. This would also prove to be Laker great Jerry Wests only NBA title. The following year, the Lakers again faced the Knicks in the 1. NBA Finals and lost. They would not make it to the Finals again in this decade, but in 1. Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The Celtics won the NBA Finals in 1. Tom Heinsohn and players Dave Cowens, Paul Silas and Jo Jo White. Neither team won another championship until the 1. However, the foundation for the renewed CelticsLakers rivalry of the 1. During the 1. 97. NCAA season, Michigan State was led by Magic Johnson to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament, where they faced Indiana State University, which was led by senior Larry Bird. In what was the most watched college basketball game ever,3. Michigan State defeated Indiana State 7. Johnson was voted Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Magic Johnson would go on to be drafted by the Lakers, and Larry Bird by the Celtics. The personal rivalry formed by these two basketball greats during college would transfer to their NBA careers, and reignite the rivalry between the two storied franchises that they came to represent. Magic and BirdeditThe Lakers Celtics rivalry was renewed in the 1. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Magic said of the games against the Celtics, when the new schedule would come out each year, Id grab it and circle the Boston games. To me, it was The Two and the other 8. Similarly, Bird said that, the first thing I would do every morning was look at the box scores to see what Magic did. I didnt care about anything else. Indians vs. Yankees Game 4 Live score updates and highlights from 2. ALDSThe Astros put away the Red Sox in Game 4 and earned a spot in the ALCS are the Indians right behind them They have the opportunity to join Houston in the American League Championship Series, but theyll have to get past Luis Severino and the Yankees to do so. Meanwhile, the Yankees were able to force Game 4 thanks to a Greg Bird homer and a stellar performance from Masahiro Tanaka, and theyll need similar excellence on Monday in order to force a decisive Game 5. Well be back to live blog at 7 p. ET, when Severino takes the mound to oppose short rest Trevor Bauer and the Indians. As usual, if you want to read from the beginning, scroll down to the first inning header and work your way back up. Or just start with us at 7 and refresh constantly and youll never be lost. This is it The Indians have just three outs left to prevent a Game 5. Theyll send Carlos Santana, Michael Brantley, and Lonnie Chisenhall to the plate against Kahnle. Aroldis Chapman is warming in case Cleveland gets any ideas about a comeback. Santana gets caught looking on a pitch inside. Sanchez helped with the framing, but it was 9. Santana had swung. Two outs left. Michael Brantley doesnt go on a check swing, but it doesnt matter because the pitch was called a strike, anyway. Cleveland is down to their final out in Game 4, and were one out from a Game 5. Heres Lonnie Chisenhall, hitless in the ALDS and with three strikeouts already today. He swings and misses at a pitch in the dirt, and the Yankees force a Game 5 back in Cleveland. Join us again on Wednesday for another elimination game live blogYan Gomes pinch hits for Urshela against Dellin Betances, and hell be followed by the top of the order Lindor and Kipnis. Betances nearly takes Gomes head off with a fastball that whizzed over his head a clear accident, but still scary Gomes isnt rattled, and draws a walk. Another ball to open the Lindor at bat, and the pitching coach is out to talk with Betances. It didnt help Lindor walked on four pitches, and now the Indians have two runners on with no outs and Tommy Kahnle coming in to face Kipnis. Kipnis goes down on strikes, and heres Jose Ramirez, just 2 for 1. ALDS. Ramirez lifts a fly ball to right field, but Judge is under it, and they just might be wasting their best chance at narrowing this lead. Jay Bruce goes down on strikes, too, and yeah. Cleveland is in trouble, with just three outs left in the game and four runs to score. Heres Josh Tomlin, hoping he can use his control to keep the Yankees from continuing to pile up those pitches and runs. It worked, with Tomlin picking up three outs on 1. Yankees scoreless. Severino indeed comes back out to start the seventh inning, and the Indians are happy to help him out by flying out on the first pitch. Brantley and Chisenhall are still due up in the inning, with Severino at 9. Michael Brantley is no longer hitless in the postseason, as he puts a grounder through the infield and into right. Severino remains in the game to face Chisenhall, who has struck out twice against the 2. Apparently its not just Brantley who was having some trouble Severino is still hitting triple digits even though hes at 1. Chisenhall was sat down with the last one of those, his third K of the evening. Hell have to get Roberto Perez, who homered last time up, out to complete the inning. The broadcast notes Hiroki Kuroda is the last Yankees starter to get to 1. Luis Severino is at nine, likely facing his final batter. He wont get it, but Perez grounded out, so he did get through seven innings. The Yankees are in a great place right now, and Game 5 feels imminent. Cody Allen is in, as the Indians try to take advantage of the day off on Tuesday to get some work in for their closer. Also, theyre only down by four runs, so Allen keeping it to four is a thing that matters, too. Hell face Frazier, Hicks, and Gardner in the bottom of the seventh. The Allen plan is not working so well. The Yankees just have Clevelands number tonight once again, Judge is up with multiple runners in scoring position, and theres just one out. Judge struck out for the fourth time, but it was on a pitch well outside the zone, so its not entirely his fault. Still, protect the plate, big guy. A popup ends the inning and keeps Allen from adding to the Yankees lead. Jaime Garcia and Tommy Kahnle are up in the Yankees bullpen. Severino is still out there, though, approaching his 9. Cleveland order comes up. Ramirez continues to look. Thats strikeout number eight for Severino in the game. Severino even got Jay Bruce out, finishing off a 1 2 3 inning, so he could realistically come out for the seventh inning if Joe Girardi wants. Since that would help avoid Garcia coming in, thats probably not a bad plan. Urshela fields a grounder, and this time it doesnt cause him bodily harm or end with a throw sailing over Santana at first. Urshela couldnt catch the next one, though, because it was a homer to right for Gary Sanchez. Yankees. The score doesnt completely cover why this game feels like its going to be a New York W. The Yankees have forced Indians pitchers to throw 1. Severino is at 8. New York is making Cleveland work, waiting for their pitch, and its brought them seven runs. Theres still a lot of game left, but every inning makes it feel more and more like Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, and Cody Allen in Game 5 is the cure for what ails the Indians in Game 4. Theyll have to face CC Sabathia, so it wont be easy, but neither will be coming back from down four runs against a team thats just about to dip into their own super bullpen. Lindor is taking that shortstop as field general thing a little too seriously here, as he runs out into actual left field, not shallow left field, for an over the shoulder grab that probably would have been a lot easier for the actual left fielder. He caught it, at least, so the inning ends, and Clevelands lineup gets another shot in the seventh. Roberto Perez just went deep to make it 5 3 New York its worth remembering there is still a whole lot of game left. Severino is up to 7. With the Yankees pen, that could still be more than enough to force a Game 5, but Severino will need to slow Clevelands bats the rest of the way. Francisco Lindor hit a rocket toward second base, but Castro jumped and caught it to end the top of the fifth. Danny Salazar just gave us a good reminder of why pitchers picking up a ball in play to throw it is terrifying, as he underthrew first base and let Todd Frazier aboard. Bryan Shaw is warmed in the pen, so Salazar can be lifted at the next real sign of trouble, which could come soon with the top of the order coming back soon. Hicks moves Frazier to third base with a grounder, bringing up Brett Gardner. Tyler Olson is also warming in the pen, and here he comes to face the left handed Gardner. Salazar ended up throwing 1 23 innings with three strikeouts, two walks, and no runs. That last figure will stick so long as Olson can strand Frazier at third. Olson is having some trouble putting Gardner away eventually, a shallow, lazy fly ball to center was hit, and it surprisingly scored Todd Frazier, who got around the tag. The Yankees tested the arm of Kipnis in center but usually a second baseman and Kipnis failed the test. Yankees, and now here comes Bryan Shaw to face Aaron Judge. You will be shocked, but Aaron Judge struck out thats his third of the game.
